Project details

Description

The Daffodil Apps Fellowship 2016 was an apps competition centered around women’s rights issues, organized by WE CAN Bangladesh and hosted by Daffodil International University (DIU). The competition aimed to inspire university students to develop technological solutions to social problems such as violence against women.

The competition began with a grooming session on February 15, where Jinat Ara Haque, National Coordinator of WE CAN Bangladesh, discussed the women’s rights situation in the country. The session also included technical guidance from Dr. Touhid Bhuiyan and Dr. Syed Akhter Hossain of DIU, focusing on app development, programming, and user interface design. Out of 96 registered groups, 22 teams received training, and nine were selected for the final round.

Our three-member team, TR Group, from Daffodil International University, was nominated as the second runners-up. We developed an application called Safe+, a map-based tool designed to enhance women's safety. The app allows users to call the police by voice command or by pressing a button, notifying their relatives in the process. Additionally, users can mark roads as unsafe, helping to protect others, especially at night or during vulnerable times.

This recognition highlighted our team's ability to combine technical skills with social responsibility to create impactful digital solutions. For more details, you can read about the competition in The Daily Star and Dhaka Tribune.
